Chinese Giant Tencent Buys Majority Stake in Supercell

Tencent Holdings Limited, China’s biggest gaming and social network company, bought a majority stake in Supercell for around $10.2 billion. The mobile game development company is known for its famous game titles such as Clash of Clans, Hay Day, Boom Beach, and Clash Royale.  The said stake was bought from Japan’s Softbank Group who first invested in Supercell in 2013.

Tencent is planning on acquiring 84.3% of Supercell through a consortium that they will own. The deal is expected to be finished late this year.

Despite the buyout, Tencent will let Supercell maintain their operational independence in Finland. Tencent President Martin Lau said that they are excited about the Supercell acquisition. Tencent’s strategic partnerships with game companies will bring new and exciting experiences to players around the world, he said.
