In an emotional speech just hours after the Britons have voted to leave the European Union, David Cameron dramatically announced his resignation as Prime Minister.
After the Leave Campaign garnered 52% of the votes with a winning margin of 1,269,501 votes, Cameron addressed the nation of his resignation outside 10 Downing Street, or more known in the UK as ‘Number 10.’ Cameron, who wanted Britain to stay in the EU, stated that there would be ‘no need for a precise timetable’ as his successor would be appointed by the Conservative Party by October. Cameron’s resignation was not foreseen as the former PM said in an article by Independent that he would not be leaving his post regardless of the result of the referendum.
David Cameron was elected as UK Prime Minister in 2010 and was re-elected in 2015 after his party won a parliamentary majority. Prior to being re-elected in 2015, Cameron promised to hold a referendum if he would win his re-election bout.
England reportedly voted overwhelmingly for Brexit while London, Scotland and Northern Ireland backed Remain.
Former London Mayor Boris Johnson is a likely frontrunner to be Cameron’s successor.
