Britain will be having their referendum on European Union membership today and the final debate on the issue was held before an audience of about 6,000 people at the Wembley Arena. This will give the two opposing camps one last opportunity to explain and appeal their side. The latest opinion polls still project a close race with less than 24 hours left before the referendum vote.
In the issue of immigration, newly elected pro-EU London Mayor Sadiq Khan pointed out on how Britain has benefited from European immigrants. Khan directed his political sentiments onto his predecessor Boris Johnson, an advocate of the Brexit campaign. Khan was joined by the leader of the Scottish Conservative, Ruth Davidson, in attacking the former mayor. Davidson, who was hailed as the ‘star of the evening,’ accused Johnson of ‘scaremongering’ and ‘lying’ regarding apprehensions of Turkey joining EU. Johnson countered the pro-EU side’s accusations by describing that the EU is a ‘job-destroying engine’ and that the best way to make Britain supreme is to leave the EU.
Johnson was joined by the Labour MP, Gisela Stuart, and energy minister Andrea Ledsom while Frances O’Grady, the TUC general secretary joined Khan and Davidson.
The polls will open today Thursday, June 23.
