Women Entrepreneurs Making Change Happen in India

India is experiencing a boom in the startup scene. As of the third quarter of this year, the country has raised $6.4 billion worth of funding for its startups. Amidst this fervor, what’s interesting to note is the small percentage of Indian women entrepreneurs in tech.

Though only 9% of Indian startup founders are women especially in tech, there are those who defied the odds and became the change they wanted to see in India.

Anisha Singh of MyDala, a startup for daily deals was on the verge of failure back in 2011. It was during when Groupon experienced problems, which also affected other coupon models. She took a risk and turned mobile even when smartphones hadn’t quite penetrated the Indian scene at that time. Her bold move paid off and today MyDala has over 200 million registered users, spanning over 200 Indian cities.

A former journalist, Saire founded Sheroes, which helps women find jobs. The inspiration for the startup came from her observation that many women left their jobs just so they could raise their families. She said in a recent interview with Tech in Asia, “I just want to show them that this doesn’t need to be the end of the road.”
