Regardless of what type of business you run, you need to make security a priority. If you do not do so, thieves will target you. They know a soft target when they see one, so will try to steal from you rather than a business that has better security in place. Here are a few suggestions to help you to keep your premises secure and your staff safer.
Restrict access when necessary
You need to ensure you only let authorised personnel through into the heart of your business premises. Putting up signs is part of doing this.
The fact that the signs are there will put most would be thieves off. They know that if they are found in restricted areas, they cannot simply say they got lost.
If you have the budget and space install sliding doors that separate your reception area from the rest of your business. Employing a receptionist or security guard will help a great deal too. Both approaches ensure someone cannot simply walk in off the street and gain access to valuable assets.
Use ID cards
It is a really good idea to invest in ID cards. Provided they are sophisticated enough they will be very difficult for a would-be thief to replicate.
If you can afford to do so, incorporate entry chips into your ID cards and invest in the appropriate hardware for each door in your premises. Doing this enables you to set things up so you can see who has entered which areas when. Of course, someone’s card can still get stolen or lost. But, at least you will know which card has been used. For firms that hold high-value items in their premises or sensitive data, a fingerprint ID system may be worth investing in.
Put up security cameras
Studies show that CCTV cameras put most thieves off, especially if they think they are good quality. The last thing they want is for you to pass legible pictures of them onto the police.
Secure your perimeter
Putting up a tall fence or hedge can be very effective deterrent. It makes it hard for would be vandals or thieves to scope out your premises. You will also protect yourself from casual vandalism, such as graffiti.
Consider installing blinds
Installing external blinds on every door and window will also act as a deterrent. Getting a blind up takes time and there is no way to do it without making a lot of noise.
If you do decide to do that, buy the anti-graffiti type. Unfortunately, blinds are a magnet for graffiti artists. To them, it is a giant canvas that is too tempting to ignore.
Should your blinds be vandalized, clean them up immediately. This has been proven to put most vandals off.
Provide security training for your staff
