An announcement was made that by the year 2022, new vehicles by twenty manufacturers will feature automatic emergency braking as standard equipment. The 20 automakers part of the agreement cover around 99% of the market for new vehicles in the United States.
Automatic emergency braking systems make use of sensors and cameras to detect crashes that are about to happen. The driver is then warned so that brakes can be applied. Should the driver not react in a timely manner, the vehicle takes over and applies the brakes on its own. Today, several automakers already include AEBs as part of their safety systems.
