Less then three weeks after its initial release, Captain America: Civil War has already garnered the second-highest global box office total for this year. And to think it’s only been 10 days since it has been released in U.S. theaters.
For the second weekend, it has domestic sales has been estimated to reach $72.6 million and an estimated $84.2 million from 55 foreign markets for the third weekend. All in all, it brings the film’s cumulative box office up to $940.9 million, which is just less than $30 million behind the top record held by Zootopia, which is at $969.8 million. Captain America: Civil War is expected to cross the billion-dollar box office mark before this week ends.
For the past several years, Disney has made Marvel Comics superheroes the focus of their big early-May release. Three films The Avengers (2012), Iron Man 3 (2013) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) were all May releases and finished the month with more or less $400 million in domestic sales.
