Drone Slayer Lawsuit Creates Unusual Legal Environment

After shooting down a drone out of concern for his teenage daughters’ privacy, William “Drone Slayer” Merideth claims he would gladly do it again. Merideth claims to have called the police on two previous occasions when he saw the drone hovering above his property. When the police couldn’t do anything about it, he decided to take matters into his own hands.

A lawsuit filed by the drone’s owner has led to an uncommon scenario where the federal government sovereignty of the skies is challenged by a homeowner’s right to privacy. Although the Federal Aviation Administration claims sole authority over the national airspace, Kentucky law does provide landowners the right to utilize necessary force in order to prevent trespassing. Merideth has since been cleared of all charges.
