The Email Privacy Act or H.R. 699 has been unanimously approved by the U.S. House of Representatives. It has now been sent to the Senate and hopefully pass on to the President.
The bill which was originally introduced in the House early last year, updates the 1986 Electronic Communications Privacy Act. It closes the loophole allowing emails and other communications to be retrieved even without a warrant. It’s a good law, albeit a couple of decades late.
During the debate, representatives agreed that a lot has changed and that the amendment is indeed “long overdue.”
“Under current law, there are more protections for a letter in a filing cabinet than an email on a server,” said Congresswoman Suzan Delbene (D-Wash.).
