President-elect Rodrigo R. Duterte’s calls for faster internet service are already supported by top telecommunications companies. Mr. Duterte threatened to open the industry to foreign investors if telcos fail to improve their services. In separate statements, PLDT and Globe Telecom revealed that their plans are aligned with that of the government’s.
According to PLDT Public Affairs Head Ramon R. Isberto, the company is in “the middle of a 3-year network investment program that is in the process of significantly improving telecom and internet services for PLDT and Smart customers and will support national development initiatives.”
