In a report from Financial Times, Google’s VR headset will debut this 2016, which will compete with Samsung’s Gear VR. The said device will need to be paired with a smartphone in order to operate. Together with this, the report also says that Google will also release an Android VR software. Google is working hard on improving the VR experience. They aim to accomplish this by making the new VR software a natural part of the Android operating system.
The new headset is to serve as a successor of sorts to Google Cardboard, which was released by Google back in 2014. Google hasn’t made any official announcements about new hardware in the VR space, although there is a strong possibility that the company might announce the product at the Google I/O conference this year.
Google has also invested in augmented reality, a VR variant which inserts computer-generated images into real-life settings. The company was part of a group that put almost $800 million into Magic Leap, a Florida-based augmented reality company.
