Just a week after the massive deal that resulted in the P69.1 billion buyout of San Miguel Corporation’s telco assets, PLDT and Globe have begun the installation of necessary equipment for the use of the coveted 700MHz frequency. Through his Twitter account, PLDT Chairman Manny Pangilinan announced the successful activation of the first high-speed internet cell sites in Tanay and Davao City. Globe on the other hand activated its first 700Mhz cell site over the weekend near Hardin ng Bougainvillea in UP Diliman, Quezon City.
PLDT will be installing 360 more cell sites in Manila, Cebu and Davao with the necessary 700MHz equipment within the year while Globe said it would fire up 200 sites in the next few months.
The Philippines not only has one of the slowest internet speed in Asia but also one of the most expensive. The growing clamor for improvement in performance by the public is echoed by the incoming administration. Both telcos promised that with the recent acquisition of the valuable 700MHz frequency, improvement in internet browsing speeds will be felt within the span of three to six months.
