Korean tech giant Samsung has formed 5 new startups to develop early-stage products fostered from its innovation program called Creative Lab (C-Lab). The five new firms are going to be founded by 18 Samsung employees who have resigned from their current positions in the company. They will at least have a year to work on the idea
In the annual CES this year, Samsung gave a sneak peek at the said ideas and products that will be developed by their spinned-out startups. One of the companies, Welt, offers a smart belt that can track your waist size, monitor your eating habits, and count the number of steps you have taken. Based on the data it collects, the “discreet” device then creates a weight management plan for you. The other startup companies include a mobile app called Locksa, a piece of software called Save Energy Cost, a new vacuous insulator dubbed as “Samsung Insulation” and an intriguing product called the Idea Printer which claims to be able to do as what its name implies: print out ideas in your head (presumably with the help of a smartphone app).
Samsung states that the goal of the C-Lab program is to promote innovation and entrepreneurship among its workforce. To date, the C-Lab program has had 130 projects with around 480 employees participating, Lee Jae Il (director of Samsung’s DMC R&D Center) said.
