Uber’s official brand accounts have been blocked by WeChat, a massively popular messaging app in China. The move promises to lock out Uber from an important channel, preventing them from promoting their car-hailing services. The accounts have been blamed for the supposed illegal collection of user data, among other things that are against the terms of service.
WeChat has responded to the deletion of the accounts by saying, “All the features of the account you followed have been blocked. You can’t access it now”. The blocking will not have a major effect on their core business, but it will put a damper on their social media marketing strategy.
