Abundance vs. Scarcity

In the book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”,

author Stephen Covey said that “Most people are deeply scripted in what I call the Scarcity Mentality…They have a hard time being genuinely happy for the success of other people.”

Most people can hardly get by and pay the credit card bills. They scrape by, worrying about how to pay the bills, send their children to school, and hoping that in a twist of fate, they will win a jackpot prize or get a promotion in the office. They spend their paycheck for the latest Iphone, flat-screen HD TV or for dining out in bars with friends, and sooner before the next paycheck, they’re already broke. Their minds are limited to conformity and jumping in the bandwagon. They become victims of fate and circumstance. This kind of life reflects what is termed as “scarcity mindset”.

Just for example, you’ve been laid- off from your job since the company you’re working did cost- cutting, you’ve got two kids in high school, and bills to pay, how would you feel if someone asks for help from you? It’s likely that you would ignore the person asking help since you’re down in the rut and feel that all the burdens in the world was dumped on you.

At any other time whether you are struggling or financially well- off, there’s a mounting urgency for us to change our set of thinking. Increasing number of people in their 20’s and 30′ are changing the face of business and creating the future of America in the coming years.

The Abundance Mindset

Let’s look at the other side of the sphere- the Abundance mindset.

Stephen Covey wrote in his book that,

“Abundance mentality flows out of a deep and inner sense of personal worth and security. It is the paradigm that there is plenty out there and enough to spare for everybody.”

This “Abundance Mindset” is what the rich and successful person have. Having an “Abundance mindset” creates and releases positive thoughts, feelings and actions. When one is positive, it attracts happiness, peace and more good things in life. Surely, that’s what everyone is after for.

It doesn’t matter where you are in your life right now, you have to know that every thing in your present was a result of your thinking and past decisions. When you stop blaming others, you realize that it’s high time that you develop an Abundance mindset for you to have more in life.

But, why is it that only those few rich and successful people have an abundance mindset? How do you cultivate and attract abundance in your life?

The answer is that our society has molded us to have a scarcity mentality. That’s why, it becomes challenging to shift our mindset from Scarcity to Abundance. But in reality, what’s more challenging is what’s truly worth it!

Having an Abundance mindset lets you give whether a listening ear, advice, time, donation to those who most needed them. Now, let’s tackle how you can develop and attract abundance.

How to have an Abundance Mindset

Believe that you are destined for abundance.

It has been said by wise men throughout the ages and even in the Bible, how our minds are so powerful that we become what we believe. In that sense, you must believe that you are destined for great things!

Be generous.

It doesn’t mean that you bust the bank. But, you become more generous of your time to others. As the old saying reminds us, “we reap what we sow”. When you think in abundance, you think of the value you give to others rather than what you can get out of them.

Be responsible for your actions.

We are creators of our own life. That means, we have the key to wealth, money and power. Drop the victim- mentality and start living like a victor!

Be thankful.

When you are thankful of what you have right now, you’ll be rewarded with happiness and contentment. You can choose to envy and compare yourself to others or choose to look at the brighter side of where you are in the moment. The choice is yours. The former breeds unhappiness, jealousy and pain, while the latter breeds more happiness and joy. Appreciate the small things and those things of value such as your family, your husband or wife, your children and your close friends.

Think positive.

When life makes a turn for the worst or everything seems falling apart, it’s easy for us to feel down and beaten. But, as you develop an Abundance mindset, you realize that it’s not the circumstances but how you react to it. How we take and handle our problems is more important than the problem itself. When you’re laid off from work, that could be a blessing in disguise, maybe you need to venture out or pursue a different career or start a business, it’s a matter of how you look at it and deal with these challenges. You have a choice to think positive or negative. It’s all up to you.

When life gives you lemons, why not make a lemonade?

The point is the abundance mindset opens a new and exciting world full of possibilities and opportunities for the taking. It’s not gonna be easy to shift our mentality from being poor to abundance, but the thing is, when are you gonna start living life in abundance? The best time is to start today.

Remember, in the face hardships and bitterness, still, life is beautiful! It’s just a matter of mindset.
