Earlier this week, a cabinet official said that the current administration is adamant in creating a new department which will focus solely on providing shelter for the informal sector.
In a senate hearing held in Pasay, budget secretary Benjamin M. Diokno disclosed that a recent decision to form a Department of Housing was made in a cabinet meeting.
The secretary said that he is currently working with the Office of the Vice President to get the job done. He added that they are working directly under the Vice President to work on the processes involved and that the new project is one of the measures that they will work on during the the next Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC).
Diokno is not certain that they will get total support, but he remains positive. Similar bills have been submitted in the Congress before, but none of those have been passed and turned into a law.
The creation of the Department of Housing was mandated by Vice-President Maria Leonor G. Robredo who was appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte as Chief of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC).
