While Google, Uber, Apple and other top companies are working on autonomous vehicles, Otto is developing something that can fitted into trucks.
Founded by former Googlers Anthony Levandowski, Lior Ron, Don Burnette, and Claire Delaunay, Otto aims to shape the future by rethinking the commercial trucking industry.
For those who fear that Otto will replace drivers and make them obsolete, Levandowski and Lior assures them that their immediate goal is not replacement but rather assistance. Another aim is to allow drivers to take a break and rest safely, nap even, while putting their truck on autopilot.
The duo said “We intend to enhance the capabilities of the Otto truck, collect safety data to demonstrate its benefits, and bring this technology to every corner of the U.S. highway system.”
Otto announced that it already completed one public highway demo of its system and is already preparing more plans.
