‘The Force Awakens’ Shatters Records with $238 Million Debut

Chalk it up to the magic of George Lucas’ original creation. Star Wars: The Force Awakens has raked in $238 million in terms of combined U.S. and Canadian ticket sales. The previous record holder was Universal Studio’s “Jurassic World”, which hauled in $208.8 million last June.

The critical and commercial success of the film is indicative of the franchise’s revival as one of Hollywood’s most-beloved series. Since acquiring Lucasfilm in 2012 for $4 billion, Disney has greatly expanded Star Wars merchandise lines, produced brand new TV shows and has plans to include the franchise in their Florida and California theme parks. Besides those developments, more films are scheduled to be released.
