A Swiss Biotech company recently discovered that pomegranates has anti-aging properties.

In a scientific journal called Nature Medicine, research scientists at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland reported that a particle in the fruit allows the muscles to prevent themselves from aging rapidly. The recent discovery boosted the fruit’s reputation as a superfood. Clinical trials in humans are on its way and more information about the findings are already published in the journal.

According to the findings, injecting a type of microflora human metabolite called urolithin A to an old mice increased its running endurance by an average of more than forty percent. Urolithin A is produced in the human gastrointestinal tract after taking foods with ellagitannins such as pomegranates. Ellagitannins are biomolecules which are known to have antioxidant and other disease prevention properties.

The biotech company is currently developing a natural supplement that could enhance muscle strength during aging.

EPFL president and Amazentis co-founder, Patrick Aebischer said that their research could unearth the hidden benefits of urolithin A including its powerful health benefits.
